Inclusive Casting

Create opportunities for one or more of your production's leading roles to be played by a person with disability. The role doesn’t necessarily need to specify that it is intended for a person with disability—break stereotypical expectations by considering all roles, including background artists. When reviewing your overall casting, ask yourself: does it realistically portray society?

For roles written for a person with a specific disability, it is essential to cast individuals who authentically represent that disability. For example, a role for a wheelchair user must be played by an actor who actually uses a wheelchair. Authentic casting promotes genuine representation, allowing individuals with disability to bring depth and nuance to their characters through their lived experiences.

Moreover, accessible audition processes are key to fostering diversity and equal representation. Productions should remove barriers that prevent people with disability from participating, such as providing accessible venues, sign language interpreters, and flexible audition formats. Ensuring an inclusive casting process empowers actors and performers with disabilities to showcase their talents, contributing to richer and more credible storytelling.
